CMOS Logic Circuit

CMOS is  by far the most popular technology for the implementation of digital systems. The small size, ease of fabrication, and low power dissipation of MOSFETs enable extremely high levels of integration of both logic and memory circuits.

In this section, we build our knowledge of inverter design and consider the design of CMOS circuits that realize combinational-logic functions. In conbinational circuits, the output at any time is a function only of the values of input signals at that time. Thus, these circuits do not have memory and do not employ feedback. Combinational-logic circuits are used in large quantities in a multitude of applications; indeed, every digital system contains large numbers of combinational-logic circuits

IC Component

Memory is a very important part of digital systems. Its availability in digital computers allows for storing programs and data. Furthermore, it is important for temporary storage of the output produced by a combinational circuits for use at a later time in the operation of a digital system.

Topic Three +

Semiconductor Memories

Most physical systems incorporate some form of feedback. It is interesting to note, though, that the theory of negative feedback has been developed by electronics engineers. In this search for methods for the design of amplifiers with stable gain for use in telephone repeaters, Harold Black, an electronics engineer with the Western Electric Company, invented the feedback amplifier in 1928. Since then the technique has been so widely used that it is almost impossible to think of electronic circuits without some form of feedback, either implicit or explicit. Furthermore, the conceopt of feedback and its associated theory are currently used in areas other than engineering, such as in the modeling of biological systems

Introduction

The 3-terminal semiconductor device MOSFET is the most widely used electronic device, in the design of integrated circuits (ICs), which are circuits fabricated on a single silicon chip. MOSFET are made small and their operation requires comparatively little power. Analog circuits such as amplifirers and filters are implemented in MOS technology.

To develop in the reader a high degree of familiarity with the MOSFET, as most of its applications are in integrated-circuit (IC) design.
